Completed project: an IKEA kitchen cabinet installation in King City

A King City homeowner had a stack of IKEA kitchen boxes, a SEKTION instruction booklet, and no desire to spend a week deciphering cam-lock diagrams. They wanted the cabinets assembled, hung level, and finished with a butcher-block counter and faucet. Flat-pack kitchens are a genuine skill — the difference between a tidy run and a wavy one is all in the layout and the levelling.

The scope of work

We assembled the cabinet boxes, mounted the suspension rail dead level, and hung the uppers and bases off it so the whole run lines up. Blue slab fronts went on with consistent, even reveals between the doors and drawers, the butcher-block-style top was cut and fitted, and a stainless single-lever faucet was installed and tested. Getting the first cabinet perfectly level and plumb is what makes every cabinet after it fall into place.

The result

A boxed kitchen became a finished one — cabinets square and level, drawers aligned, and a counter and faucet ready to use. The blue fronts against the light wood counter give it a clean, current look that belies the flat-pack origins.

What an IKEA kitchen install costs

Flat-pack kitchen installs are priced by the number of cabinets and whether counters, panels and plumbing are part of the job. Rough guide for York Region:

• A few cabinets assembled and hung: $400–$900
• A full small-to-mid kitchen run assembled and installed: $1,200–$3,000
• With counter fitting, panels and faucet/plumbing: $3,000–$6,000

Every kitchen is quoted after we see the layout and the box count. Countertops in stone are measured and installed separately by a fabricator.
